Policy Statement

In accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Integrated Accessibility Standards, Ontario Regulation 191/11 (IASR), Conestoga has developed this policy to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal access to programs, services, and activities at the college. 

Scope

This policy applies to all Conestoga facilities (owned, leased, or rented), and to all members of the Conestoga Community. 

Definitions

杏吧原创 maintains a glossary of terms specific to the institution. The terms in use for this document are defined below.

Accessibility
鈥婻efers to how services, technology, locations, devices, environments, and products are designed to accommodate persons with disabilities. Accessibility means giving people of all abilities equal opportunities to take part in life activities. According to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the term implies conscious planning, design, and/or effort to make sure something is barrier-free to persons with disabilities.
AODA
The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) ensures that public sector organizations such as Conestoga meet accessibility standards as defined in the Act.  This Act applies to every person or organization in the public and private sectors of the Province of Ontario, including the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
Barrier
鈥婣ccording to the Accessible Canada Act (2019) a barrier is 鈥渁nything  physical, architectural, technological, or attitudinal, anything that is based on information or communications or anything that is the result of a policy or a practice  that hinders the full and equal participation in society of persons with an impairment, including a physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication or sensory impairment or a functional limitation.鈥
Conestoga Community
refers to all registered students, both full-time and part-time; all paid employees, full-time, part-time and casual; all others associated with Conestoga including board members, retirees, alumni or volunteers, and visitors who are granted temporary permission to use Conestoga鈥檚 Information Technology resources.
Disability
As defined by the Ontario Human Rights Code, a disability is:
  • any degree of physical disability, infirmity, malformation or disfigurement that is caused by bodily injury, birth defect or illness and, without limiting the generality of the foregoing, includes diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, a brain injury, any degree of paralysis, amputation, lack of physical co-ordination, blindness or visual impediment, deafness or hearing impediment, muteness or speech impediment, or physical reliance on a guide dog or other animal or on a wheelchair or other remedial appliance or device,
  • a condition of mental impairment or a developmental disability,
  • a learning disability, or a dysfunction in one or more of the processes involved in understanding or using symbols or spoken language,
  • a mental disorder, or
  • an injury or disability for which benefits were claimed or received under the insurance plan established under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997.
Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR)
Is an Ontario regulation (O. Reg. 191/11) under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA). It sets mandatory, enforceable standards to identify, remove, and prevent barriers for people with disabilities in key areas of daily life.

Policy

  • Conestoga is committed to an accessible, inclusive college where persons with disabilities are treated with dignity, independence, and full participation.
  • Accessibility will be embedded into all college policies, programs and practices.
  • Conestoga will prevent and remove barriers to participation and access for all persons with disabilities.
  • Accessibility needs will be responded to promptly and respectfully.
  • The college will meet legal obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR).
